Compared to Tokyo 2020, extreme slalom among men and women will appear in the program of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. About how athletes will be able to qualify for the tournament, in what format the competition will be held: At the Olympic Games in Paris, rowing slalom will be included in the program for the ninth time since its debut in Barcelona 1992. The rowing slalom competition in Paris will be held at the complex in Vere-sur-Marne, which is located near Paris. Rowers will perform in both the canoe class (C1) and kayak class (K1). An athlete uses a single—bladed paddle in a canoe, and a two-bladed paddle in a kayak. Another fundamental difference is that in a canoe, an athlete stands on one knee, and sits in a kayak. Men's and women's extreme slalom (K-1M - extreme, K—1J - extreme) will also debut in Paris, thus the total number of disciplines of rowing slalom will increase by two. But the total number of athletes competing at the Games in this form will remain the same, and the qualification system has not changed much compared to Tokyo 2020. We tell you the most important thing about the qualification for the rowing slalom in Paris 2024. How many rowers will compete at the Olympic Games in Paris? As in Tokyo, 82 rowers (41 women and 41 men) will come to Paris for the Games, who will compete in six disciplines (three for each gender): Single kayak (K-1): 42 participants (21 men and 21 women) Single canoe (C-1): 34 participants (17 men and 17 women) Extreme slalom (K-1 — extreme): 6 participants (3 men and 3 women) Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can qualify a maximum of six athletes in rowing slalom: three women and three men — one in each discipline. In both canoes and kayaks, quotas for the Olympic Games in Paris will be distributed through the World Championships, continental championships, as well as through the quotas of the host country. Kayak World Cup: 30 quotas (15 for men and 15 for women) Continental Championships: 10 quotas (5 for men and 5 for women) The host country: 2 quotas (one for each gender) Canoe World Cup: 24 quotas (12 for men and 12 for women)m Continental Championships: 10 quotas (5 for men and 5 for women) Extreme slalom World Cup: 6 quotas (3 for men and 3 for women) In rowing slalom, quotas are first allocated for canoes. In this case, if the athlete has already qualified in the canoe class, then he or she cannot receive a quota in the kayak class, which will be given to the representative of another NOC who took the next place in the qualifying tournament. In case of a tie in any of the qualifying competitions, the previous results of the athletes are taken into account, taking into account the rules of the International Canoe Federation (ICF). The main qualification tournament for participation in the Olympic Games in Paris will be the 2023 World Rowing Slalom Championship. The best athletes in each of the disciplines will receive quotas for their NOCs. Quotas are not nominal — each NOC chooses the athletes who will take part in the Games. In addition to the World Championship, rowers will be able to qualify for the Games by participating in continental qualification tournaments, where they will be able to receive one quota of each gender per NOC. These tournaments: Pan American Championship Asian Championship African Championship European Championship Oceania Championship If any of the qualifying tournaments are cancelled or their results are annulled, the ICF rating of December 31, 2023 will be taken into account for the allocation of quotas. For extreme slalom, the discipline debuting in Paris, the ICF organizes a separate world championship, which will serve as a qualifying tournament for the Games. Only those athletes who have not yet been classified in other disciplines of rowing slalom will be able to participate in this championship. Each NOC can declare up to three athletes. The quotas will be given to representatives of the three NOCs that took the highest places. Two quotas will be distributed by the Tripartite Commission on the principle of universality in kayaking and canoeing and/or rowing slalom. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will invite all NOCs to apply for these quotas, and a decision will be made by the Tripartite Commission at the end of the classification period. The Olympic Rowing slalom tournament will be held on July 27 — August 5, 2024.
